The Safety of PlacentaSeptember 6, 2000 In early September this year, after celebrity and placenta advocate Mr. Kan Yee Ching was diagnosed with liver cancer, some newspapers interviewed professors at The University of Hong Kong Medical School. Two professors said that the injection of placenta extract may make cancer worse, and even give rise to diabetes and allergies. Such statements have raised concern among some people. However, the professors only said "perhaps". There is no medical evidence that links injection of placenta extract to cancer. Both professors did not cite any facts to support their statements, such as scientific journal references, clinical studies, or individual cases. Their conjecture is understandable because placenta contains hormones. Female hormones have been linked to increased incidence of cancer. Glucagon is also a hormone which increases blood sugar levels. However, placenta contains not only these two hormones which are already presence in our body. It also contains other hormones which counteract their actions. These natural combination of hormones balance the actions of one another to achieve normal physiological functions. For example, insulin is also a hormone, but when the amount of it balances out with glucagon, blood sugar reaches the normal level. In fact, I have never seen any report of formal studies published in authoritative scientific journals which proves that the ingestion of placenta extract has any adverse side effect. The late Dr. Ng Cheuk Kee, who is highly respected by Chinese and western doctors, emphasized in his book Healthy Diet: "Although it contains abundant animal hormones, but it has not undergone chemical extraction, and is derived from the original material, based on my own experience over several decades, I have never found any adverse side effect after ingesting placenta." There is a large quantity of triterpenoids from Reishi fruitbodies in Rejuveno's "Reishi & Placenta", which have the properties of an adaptogen: normalizing body functions. Even if there are unknown adverse side effects in placenta, they will be eliminated by these adaptogens. Reishi also strengthens the immune system, reduce blood sugar, and is anti-allergic. Experimental evidences show that placenta itself has anti-allergic effect, and we know that it works through inhibiting the release of histamine. This action is stronger than other drugs. A 39-year-old Japanese man had hereditary diabetes. After taking placenta for less than a month, his energy was restored. After 3 months, his blood sugar level returned to normal. Placenta contains Milk Stimulation Factor which increases the production of insulin and reduces blood sugar level. So placenta not only will not give rise to diabetes, but can bring blood sugar level back to normal! Besides, taking placenta orally is much safer than injecting placenta. Doctors of The University of Hong Kong Medical School also agree, "If it is taken orally, the adverse effects of placenta to the user is greatly reduced." Some friends are concerned about mad cow disease. Actually they do not have to worry about it at all. Mad cow disease happen only in the U.K. and several other countries. Rejuveno's placenta comes from a country in South America where there is no mad cow disease, and has passed the tight quarantine of health authorities before it is imported.
